Eastern European Writers: Poetry, Novellas and More

Central and Eastern European writers occupy a unique position, a kind of duality, in that they are both the inheritors of a brutal legacy of the horrors inflicted on them by two odious and destructive political “isms” of the 20th Century, namely Nazism and Soviet Communism. This is their special baggage. Yes, they are informed by that special historical experience; however, they have since been able to create writing that is at once universal while remaining grounded in their own post-communist realities. They have, thus, been able to forge some truly unique, expressive and nuanced literary voices that deserve to be heard and savored.

The Gardener -- Film Night

the GArdener.png

The Gardener is a documentary film which reflects on the meaning of gardening and its impacts on our lives. Shortly before his passing at the age of 86, influential gardener and horticulturalist Frank Cabot recounts his personal quest for perfection at Les Quatre Vents, his twenty-acre English style garden and summer estate that was opened to a film crew for the first time ever in 2009. Nestled amongst the rolling hills of the Charlevoix County in Quebec, Les Quatre Vents has become one of the world's foremost private gardens. Created over 75 years and three generations, it is an enchanted place of beauty and surprise, a horticultural masterpiece of the 21st century. Through the words of Cabot and his family, and with the participation of gardening experts and writers, the film looks back at this remarkable man's personal story and the artistic philosophy that gave birth to one of the greatest gardens in the world.

Black Flags, Blue Waters: The Epic History of the Most Notorious Pirates

Black Flags HC final cover.jpg

Westport Historical Society Annual Meeting

6:30 PM Thursday October 18 at the Shattuck Gallery, One Partners Lane, Westport

Black Flags, Blue Waters: The Epic History of America's Most Notorious Pirates presented by Eric Jay Dolin

A short business meeting will be followed by a presentation by Eric Jay Dolin whose most recent publication explores the epic history of America’s most notorious pirates. Set against the backdrop of the Age of Exploration, “Black Flags, Blue Waters” reveals the dramatic and surprising history of American piracy’s “Golden Age”—spanning the late 1600s through the early 1700s—when lawless pirates plied the coastal waters of North America and beyond. Bestselling author Eric Jay Dolin illustrates how American colonists at first supported these outrageous pirates in an early display of colonial solidarity against the Crown, and then violently opposed them. Through engrossing episodes of roguish glamour and extreme brutality, Dolin depicts the star pirates of this period, among them towering Blackbeard, ill-fated Captain Kidd, and sadistic Edward Low, who delighted in torturing his prey. Also brilliantly detailed are the pirates’ manifold enemies, including colonial governor John Winthrop, evangelist Cotton Mather, and young Benjamin Franklin. Upending popular misconceptions and cartoonish stereotypes, Dolin provides this wholly original account of the seafaring outlaws whose raids reflect the precarious nature of American colonial life.

Meet the Performers...

Mary Halvorson

wMary_Jan_2018_208_medium.JPG

One of improvised music’s most in-demand guitarists, Mary Halvorson has been active in New York since 2002, following jazz studies at Wesleyan University and the New School.

Critics have called her “a singular talent” (Lloyd Sachs, JazzTimes), ”NYC’s least-predictable improviser” (Howard Mandel, City Arts), “one of the most exciting and original guitarists in jazz-or otherwise” (Steve Dollar, Wall Street Journal), and “one of today’s most formidable bandleaders” (Francis Davis, Village Voice). The Philadelphia City Paper’s Shaun Brady adds, “Halvorson has been steadily reshaping the sound of jazz guitar in recent years with her elastic, sometimes-fluid, sometimes-shredding, wholly unique style.”

After three years of study with visionary composer and saxophonist Anthony Braxton, Ms. Halvorson became an active member of several of his bands, including his trio, septet and 12+1tet.

As a bandleader and composer, one of Ms. Halvorson’s primary outlets is her longstanding trio, featuring bassist John Hébert and drummer Ches Smith. Since their 2008 debut album, Dragon’s Head, the band was recognized as a rising star jazz band by Downbeat Magazine for five consecutive years. Most recently she has formed an octet, adding trumpeter Jonathan Finlayson, saxophonists Jon Irabagon and Ingrid Laubrock, trombonist Jacob Garchik, and pedal steel guitarist Susan Alcorn.

Flip Scipio: Talking Guitars -- Opening Reception and Concert

Postard Front Final.jpg

The Dedee Shattuck Gallery is pleased to present Flip Scipio: Talking Guitars, featuring the drawings and guitars of internationally renowned luthier Flip Scipio.

Raised in post-war Netherlands and now based in New York City, Scipio has made and restored fretted instruments for Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Ry Cooder, Chris Eldridge, Bill Frisell, Richie Havens, Norah Jones, Patty Larkin, Damien Rice, Carly Simon, Rufus Wainwright, and many others. As Scipio writes of his work, music is “that common language that allows people all across the world to communicate or at least understand each other without receiving specific instruction... my workshop is my church, in which I find a relief in concentration that I often lack in the outside world, solace in being able to repair broken things, and a kind of forgiveness for the things I don’t seem to be able to achieve. At best, my shop is a place of meditation where I can find moments of transcendence into a place of better understanding and trust without having to close something else out.”

Hired by the esteemed American guitar dealer and collector George Gruhn, Scipio was a staff member of the repair department at the Rhode Island based Guild Guitar Company from 1986 until 1988. He was also the repair-shop manager for Mandolin Brothers Ltd., the legendary Staten Island NY guitar shop that specialized in rare fretted instruments. In January of 2017 Scipio gave a series of lectures on various aspects of Guitar Construction and Repair at the prestigious Cartagena XI Festival Internacional de Música in Cartagena, Colombia.

The Dedee Shattuck Gallery invites the public to an artists' reception to celebrate the opening on Saturday, September 8, from 5-7pm, including a concert by Flip Scipio at 6pm.

Instructor Biography

Lisa Lebofsky

Lisa Lebofsky paints the susceptibility of nature, correlating its restlessness with our own human vulnerabilities. Her direct participation with the landscape is vital to imbue a painting with the energy of a specific place, so that viewers can connect viscerally: to move, excite and engage them.

Lebofsky finds inspiration by traveling extensively, often to remote parts of the world, in order to immerse herself in different environment and cultures. She seeks out areas around the globe that are particularly susceptible to the impacts of climate change, and meets with local residents to discuss how their community is impacted. To a great extent, these personal interactions inform what areas and what subject matter is ultimately painted. Recent regions visited include Antarctica, Newfoundland and Labrador, Greenland and The Maldives. She currently lives and works in New York City.

Westport Historical Society: Westport's Underground History

35884840_10160624658865385_3639158204018982912_o.jpg

Presented by Holly Herbster

Join Holly Herbster from The Public Archaeology Lab to discover what archaeology reveals about Westport’s unique and diverse natural and social landscapes. Westport’s history stretches back nearly 12,000 years, even though much of the past is not readily visible on the ground surface today. In 2004, The Westport Historical Society funded a town-wide archaeological survey designed to collect information about known sites and to identify the types and locations of sites not yet documented. Since then, archaeological projects in town, advances in digital mapping, and collaboration with Wampanoag historians have added to the story of Westport’s deep past.

Holly Herbster is a Senior Archaeologist at The Public Archaeology Laboratory, Inc. (PAL) in Pawtucket, Rhode Island and has spent 30 years researching southeastern Massachusetts history. She was the lead archaeologist for the 2004 town-wide survey and has completed more than two dozen archaeological projects in Westport and the surrounding Bristol County communities.

Seeking the Line - Reception

The Dedee Shattuck Gallery is pleased to present Seeking the Line, featuring the work of four multimedia artists: Gabrielle Ferreira, Marjorie Forté, Mindy Horn and Jane Schiowitz. The word ‘line’ comes from the Latin linea, which means both the drawn line and a length of thread. The Line in this exhibit refers to renderings and textiles: while Horn and Schiowitz use clay and paint, respectively, to render rich, two-dimensional compositions, Ferreira and Forté use thread to weave, stitch, and sew complicated patterns. Each artist is following a line, discovering the power in this most primary element.

Gabrielle Ferreira is pursuing a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Textiles at RISD with a focus on weaving and print design. Her work is an examination of place, heritage and identity. Learning to silkscreen and engrave at an early age, she uses hand stitchery, sewing, knitting and weaving traditions passed down through her Cape Verdean and Portuguese heritage.

Marjorie Forté is a mixed media artist. She studied at Pratt Institute and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Working with thread and yarn since childhood, she continues to push the limits of her materials. While recently focusing on fiber, she has worked in other mediums including oil sticks, charcoal, pencil, collage, and monoprint.

Mindy Horn has worked as a ceramic artist and as a paper conservator in Connecticut and New York—media that require meticulous work, an appreciation of science and of technique, and the love and understanding of art. Both are fragile, transformable and respond to touch; with time and use, both materials perceptively record their own history.

Jane Schiowitz is an artist whose paintings and works on paper have been exhibited across the United States and in New York City, including five solo shows at the Elizabeth Harris Gallery. She received an MFA in Painting is from the Milton Avery Graduate School at Bard College. Her work has been reviewed in numerous publications including The New York Times and the New Yorker, and she is the recipient of a Pollock Krasner Award for painting and a three-time fellow at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.

He Named Me Malala - Movie Night!

He-Named-Me-Malala_1444151780.jpg

He Named Me Malala is an intimate portrait of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai, who was targeted by the Taliban and severely wounded by a gunshot when returning home on her school bus in Pakistan's Swat Valley. The then 15-year-old was singled out, along with her father, for advocating for girls' education, and the attack on her sparked an outcry from supporters around the world. She miraculously survived and is now a leading campaigner for girls' education globally as co-founder of the Malala Fund.

Acclaimed documentary filmmaker Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth, Waiting for Superman) shows us how Malala, her father Zia and her family are committed to fighting for education for all girls worldwide. The film gives us an inside glimpse into this extraordinary young girl's life--from her close relationship with her father who inspired her love of education, to her impassioned speeches at the UN, to her everyday life with her parents and brothers.

"A chronicle of Malala's achievements alone would make for a fascinating documentary; what sets this film apart is how viewers meet not only the Malala the role model, but also Malala the teenager."
S. Jhoanna Robledo, Common Sense Media

"A fittingly poignant treatment of an inspiring subject."
Dan Jolin, Empire

"Scenes of Malala at home in Birmingham, England, where she and her family moved after the attack, show a fairly typical adolescent, teasing, and being teased by, two brothers."
Michael O'Sullivan, Washington Post

"This is, in fact, a surprisingly bright-spirited and profoundly moving portrait of Malala."
Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal

There will be an Admission fee of $5 Please RSVP by calling 508-636-4177 or by emailing monica@dedeeshattuckgallery.com

Large-Scale Woodblock Printing Demonstration

June 16th & 17th

10-5pm

Printing a woodblock by Jenya Damsky

Printing a woodblock by Jenya Damsky

BIG INK is an organized network of creative thinkers focused on promoting the art of large-scale woodblock printing. The program was started in 2012 by Directors Lyell Castonguay and Carand Burnet as a way to spread their passion for the medium with other artists and the general public. BIG INK works by establishing a temporary print shop on site at partnership organizations, most often at museums, universities, art centers, studios, and galleries. Artists are selected, either by personal invitation or through a call-for-entry process, to attend these events and print original woodblocks at least 24” x 36” in dimension. The community is invited to witness the sheer spectacle involved in creating these large-scale works.

Community MusicWorks

The MusicWorks Collective closes its 21st season with a cathartic program featuring three composers with special insight into the world of strings. Annika Socolofsky’s Hush (2017) explores our instruments’ vocal and textural qualities, wringing magic from the unlikely marriage of horsehair, steel, and wood. Edward Elgar’s Serenade and Arnold Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht both achieve a similar alchemy – these are two repertoire standards that speak straight to the heart.

Witness to Conflict: The Art of Documentary Opening Reception

Front.jpg

The Dedee Shattuck Gallery is pleased to present WITNESS TO CONFLICT: The Art of Documentary. This exhibition focuses on art from conflict zones—featuring the paintings of Iraq War veteran James Razko, sound art and photography from New York Times reporter Andy Mills, and images of Sierra Leone’s jungles by photographer Kipp Wettstein.

Razko’s ‘Night Vision’ painting series depicts scenes of what he terms ‘violent beauty’– the iridescent green glow of explosions as seen through night vision goggles.

Mills, the producer of The New York Times podcast “Caliphate”, presents sounds and photographs from reporting in Mosul and surrounding refugee camps.

Wettstein’s photographs are part of an early effort to explore and contextualize a small piece of what remains of Sierra Leone’s primary and secondary rainforests. Since the end of the civil war in 2002, these forests have been reduced to less than five percent of their original coverage. This project also explores the realities and challenges of life in a place that experienced the recent and devastating effects of Ebola, war, and poverty, all of which have stories linked to the rainforest.

All Receptions are FREE and open to the public
